Why do you need an air pump in the aquarium
Often, beginning aquarists underestimate the role of a water pump in a fish house. Often they use this device not correctly, which is displayed on the health status of fish and vegetation in the aquarium. So, what is the purpose of the water pump, how important is it, and what do you need to know about the features of its operation?
The important role of a water pump in a fish house is to saturate the water with oxygen. Dissolved oxygen in water is needed not only for small fish, but also for biofilters and plants. It is a vital product for snails and other living creatures in an aquarium. And during the night-time period, almost all the plants in the aquarium begin to consume oxygen. After all, the process of photosynthesis in the absence of light is suspended. In addition to plants, oxygen, thanks to the water pump, is actively used by bacteria that are involved in the biofiltration process, that is, an aquarium filter cannot do without oxygen.
Where does oxygen come from in the fish house when the water pump is absent or turned off? He enters the aquarium through the surface layer of water in direct contact with air. And the greater the surface contact of water with air, the greater the concentration of oxygen in the air, the better the aquarium water is saturated with it. This means that if you want to increase the effectiveness of oxygenation of water, you need to think about more frequent airing of the room where the aquarium is located. The second option is good ventilation of this room and the widest possible aquarium with its minimum height.
And now a little about the solubility of oxygen in water. It has its limits: the warmer the water, the less it can hold gases. That is, at a temperature of, for example, 22 degrees Celsius, the fish will have enough oxygen to breathe. When the temperature rises to 28 degrees Celsius, the inhabitants of the fish house will begin to feel an acute lack of oxygen. With its deficiency, fish begin to swim in the upper layers of the water, so they save their position.
It is in such situations that a water pump is needed in an aquarium. It is necessary when there are many aquarium fish and plants, snails and shrimps. And if among other equipment in the fish house there is a powerful external filter. it is simply impossible to do without a water pump.
Its relevance also increases with the summer increase in air temperature and the absence of air conditioning in the room with a fish house.
It is important not to forget that the aquarium inlet pump must be kept on all the time. No need to turn it off at night. And many novice aquarists do this because of the noise that this device creates, which makes it difficult to sleep at night in a room with a fish house. Novice aquarists should understand that it is at night that oxygen consumption in the aquarium increases, and therefore the role of this device in the healthy habitat of pets increases. As for the noise of the water pump, initially you need to focus on less noisy models and take this into account when purchasing the device. Today, with a huge assortment, the choice of water pumps is no longer a problem.
Sometimes aquarists, buying a too noisy water pump and trying to reduce this noise, wrap it in rags. But these aquarium devices must be well cooled. And such “clothes” for the water pump only hinder cooling. The air inlet in the device should provide this function, and the rags will, again, only interfere with this. Do not do such experiments! If you need to reduce the noise emitted by the pump, it is better to install it on rubber feet.
If you are disturbed by the noise that emanates from the air bubbles, then you can try to form a special bell above the bubble exit zone. Do it from the top of an ordinary plastic bottle. So the noise from the bubbles will be slightly less.
