Underwater, fish and plants also breathe oxygen, as do terrestrial living organisms. Without this gas, there is no way, no matter if you live on land or in the deep sea.
In natural water bodies, oxygen is produced by plants (during the day, during photosynthesis, they produce oxygen, but at night, during rest, they absorb it with the release of carbon dioxide) and gradually dissolve from the air, and the water layers are mixed. But in a closed system of small volume, which is an aquarium, this happens to a lesser extent. Moreover, the gas dissolves very poorly in warm water. The way out is the acquisition of a water pump, which incessantly supplies oxygen, passing bubbles through the water column.
