How To Locate The Aquarium Inlet Pump

Deciding to decorate your home with a small part of the underwater world, aquarium amateur should take into account a large number of factors that will later affect the health of the fish and the appearance of the aquarium. In addition to the corresponding aquarium, the inhabitants of the underwater world also need a sufficient amount of oxygen, because its concentration in real water is constantly changing and air dissolved in water is lost. This problem solves the air pump for the aquarium. This device performs aeration – the saturation of water contained in the air.

The water pump facilitates the circulation of water in the aquarium, making the temperature in the water column uniform. Air bubbles coming out of the water pump and rising to the surface destroy the film of bacteria and dust, which significantly improves aeration. In addition, the fountain of small bubbles, located in a suitable place, perfectly performs a decorative function and pleases the eye.

Types of water pumps

According to the principle of operation, water pumps are divided into diaphragm and piston, and each should be considered separately.

  • In a diaphragm or vibratory water pump, air is injected by moving special diaphragms that allow air to flow in one direction. It is great for small home aquariums due to its small capacity, compactness and quiet operation, as well as a relatively low price. If you want to install an aquarium in a bedroom or children’s room, where the noise level is especially important – a membrane water pump is right for you.
  • In reciprocating air pumps, air is supplied to the aquarium by means of a piston, which is driven by an electric motor. Such water pumps can be very powerful, however, their price is much higher than the cost of membrane water pumps, and the noise level of piston water pumps is much higher. Such water pumps are used in large aquariums and columns, as well as in artificial reservoirs where more power is needed and the amount of noise is not so important.

Water pumps can also vary in type of power, sharing on electric, working from a household electrical network, and autonomous (battery). The latter are necessary during the long transportation of fish, as well as during long-term outages. Battery water pumps can be both piston and vibration. During their use, you need to remember that the windings and the electromagnet of the engine require a large amount of energy. One set of batteries ensures continuous operation for four to six hours for most designs. However, there may be exceptions.

Which aquarium water pump to choose: criteria

Choosing a water pump for your aquarium should take into account the noise level produced by the device – this characteristic is better to check in advance in a quiet room. Also important is the power of the water pump, which is calculated in accordance with the volume of the aquarium using a specific formula: 0.8 l / h per 1 liter of water in the aquarium. How to choose an air pump for an aquarium of 200 liters in accordance with this formula? Very simple: 0.8 200 = 160 liters per hour – the recommended power for this aquarium. Experts note that in some cases, the figure should be reduced to 0.5 l / h, and in some to increase to 1 l / h.

Much depends on how the aquarium will be populated, because each type of fish feels comfortable as close as possible to the natural conditions. When choosing an aquarium, you should also pay attention to the regulation of the air flow, the ability to change the force, the flow rate of air from the air pump and the settings of the device, taking into account the type of filter and sprayer.

Installing a water pump aquarium.

To install a water pump, you must follow some rules. First of all, it should be noted the place where the water pump will be installed. The external aerator is located on a glass lid or on a shelf so that the end of the hose is located close to the bottom of the tank in order to provide aeration from the bottom to the surface of the aquarium. The aerator should be placed closer to the heater, so the water, when heated, will immediately be mixed, providing an optimal microclimate for the fish living in the aquarium. In case of excessive noise of a water pump, it can be installed on a soft surface, for example, on foam or foam rubber. This trick will help to reduce the amount of noise.

Use of water pump

There are many opinions on the subject of when to aerate water. Some aquarists leave the water pump on all the time, while others follow the schedule: two hours of work, two hours of break. It is also recommended to always turn on the water pump after feeding the fish. It should be remembered that the water pump of the aquarium needs regular cleaning. If you do not perform cleaning, then the water level of the pump will increase the noise level, or the device will fail at all.
