What is an aquarium inlet pump for?

Hello, dear friends!

How Often To Turn On The Air Pump In The Aquarium

Today we will talk about such a necessary thing, which is called an aquarium inlet pump! You have probably heard and even seen this device: in the “Bird markets” aquarium fish sellers often use a water pump in their aquariums. But why does he need this aquarium aquarium pump? And will you need it? That is what this article is about. So!

Aquarium inlet pump is a special device that serves to enrich water with oxygen. How does this happen? And you yourself will take a closer look and understand everything: firstly, air bubbles out of the water pumping tube, which is lowered into the water, intensively leave air bubbles and, as a result, oxygen enrichment of water occurs. And secondly, the water pump creates ripples in the water and thereby increases the surface of contact of water with air, which also saturates the water with oxygen. This procedure (I mean – water saturation with oxygen) is also called aeration. Well, the main “plus” of the water pump is that it mixes layers of aquarium water. Thus, the water in your tank will not become rotten and look like a swamp.

In what cases it is necessary to use an aquarium inlet pump? I will try to answer this question as simply as possible. Suppose your aquarium has a volume of 100 liters and there lives a whole colony of fish in an amount of, say, 50 individuals. The remnants of food, waste products of your fish fall to the bottom and begin to rot. Often, changing the water in an aquarium does not always have the time and effort: try changing the water in a 100-liter aquarium at least once and see how troublesome it is! In rotten water, fish suffer from a great lack of air and can die or become sick. And it is for such large aquariums that the water pumps are intended: they perfectly saturate the water with oxygen! And once there is oxygen in the water, the health of the fish is safe! However, the water pump does not completely solve the problem: you still have to change the water in the aquarium, whether you like it or not!

Now, about when exactly to turn on the water pump: it should not work 24 hours a day! Personally, I use the aquarium inlet pump twice a day: during the day (I turn it on for 20 minutes) and in the evening at 22 o’clock (I also turn it on for 20 minutes). This "airing" of water to my fish very much! The only thing I want to add is that in the summer, aeration should be carried out more often and longer (at high air temperatures, the water in the aquarium heats up and oxygen is consumed faster).

By the way, there is one more “knight’s move” and it is more suitable for lazy aquarists. When it comes time to replace the water in the aquarium, you can somewhat simplify this task. For this you need to collect garbage from the bottom of the aquarium. How to do it? Use a piece of transparent thin hose as a “vacuum cleaner”. The diameter of the hose should not be large: it is better to use a dropper or a hose of a slightly larger diameter (the diameter of an old Soviet penny), but not a watering! Lower one end of the hose to the bottom of the aquarium (just to the bottom: stick the edge of the hose into the ground!), And the other into the empty bucket, which is located below the level of the aquarium. In order for the water from the aquarium to overflow into the bucket, it is necessary to create a negative pressure in the hose. In simple words, I will say this: make a "leak" and the water will begin to flow! The main thing – do not swallow the smelly water. When the water begins to drain into the bucket, use the hose as a “vacuum cleaner”: drive them along the bottom and collect garbage – food residue and other waste. Be careful and attentive: do not pull the fish into the hose! When the bottom cleaning is finished, just bend the hose in the middle and the water will stop flowing! Now look at the amount of dirty water drained and pour as much into the aquarium. After that, turn on the aquarium inlet pump for 15 minutes. Here is a method for the "lazy."

That’s all, friends! I will not list the types of aquarium water pumps, their “pros” and “cons”, etc. etc : You shouldn’t bother yourself with unnecessary knowledge! Everything you need at first – you will learn from my articles! And remember the main rule in any science: do not force events! You will not be able to find out everything about anything – it is simply not possible and not necessary! As the Latins say: “Festina Lente”, which means “Hurry slowly!”

See you in the next articles!

Why do you need an air pump in the aquarium

In order for the water kingdom to please its inhabitants and owner, it is necessary to equip it properly. One of the components of this configuration is a water pump. What is its function in the fish house? How to choose it, and what to consider? We learn in detail.

Why is it needed

Living beings always require optimal living conditions for active life and well-being. Aquarium fish are no exception. They constantly need oxygen. But often the aquarium does not have enough water surface and the number of plants necessary for oxygenation. That is why the best solution is to purchase additional devices that saturate the water. This function is performed by a water pump. Here are his tasks:

  1. Providing aeration. The oxygen bubbles rising from the device additionally saturate the water with oxygen.
  2. Stirring the water. Drilling device levels the temperature in the lower and upper layers. If the fish house is equipped with a thermostat that heats some of its zones stronger, others weaker, then the water pump ensures temperature equalization. Circulation does not allow fluid to congestion.
  3. The aesthetics of the aquarium. Rising up, perpendicular to the water surface, air bubbles give capacity attractiveness.
  4. Preventing top film formation. It is usually formed in the absence of a water pump from bacteria and dust on the surface of the water.
  5. Imitation of the flow. For many fish, it is important to stay in conditions close to natural. The device creates a movement similar to the flow in the pond.

Variety of choices

Such devices are also called aerators. Most of them are vibratory machines. The principle of their operation is based on the creation by an alternating current of an electrical network of an alternating magnetic field.

Novice aquarists should be guided in how to choose the right water pump for arranging your aquarium. After all, the market is saturated with a huge range of such products. To understand the choice is not easy.

First of all, we must understand that each such device is designed for a certain amount of water. It is necessary to choose it, proceeding from its thickness. A powerful water pump is needed only for aquariums with a large volume of water. How to correctly focus on the performance of the device? Calculate it simply. It is necessary to multiply the displacement of the aquarium by 0.5 So, on a one-hundred-meter fish house you need an aerator with a capacity of 50 l / h.

For home fish houses often use submersible devices with lighting. They are installed inside the tank. This gives the fish house aesthetics, decorative. At night, a room with such a fish house is filled with a soft light.

If the owner has a need to urgently transport the fish, then a water-powered pump is used. Such a device will be indispensable in situations where power outages are often practiced in the home or office.

If we talk about external water pumps, they are good for aquariums because they are compact, do not clutter up space, are conveniently mounted and easy to use.

Today, small and silent water pumps for the aquarium are very popular. They are recommended to be used in those containers whose volume does not exceed 200 liters. That is, they can be used in the most popular metropolitan fish houses. Such devices are recommended to be included in the morning and in the evening. There is no need for the device to work all day. Such mini-water pumps are actively used for decorative purposes, because many people are attracted by the appearance of flowing oxygen bubbles.

In large aquariums, water pumps create optimal, close to natural conditions for waterfowl.

So, the purpose of the water pump is to saturate the water space with oxygen. Today, an alternative to such a device is the saturation of water with dissolved oxygen using the so-called oxidizers. The principle of their action is the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. One refueling stolitrovogo aquarium with such an oxidizer lasts for 2-4 weeks.

Why do you need a water pump in an aquarium?

The answer is obvious to everyone who has seen this device in operation: it increases the oxygen content in aquarium water. Water in a stationary state may eventually turn into a kind of swamp.

And, as a result, to the disease, and in the worst case to the death of the inhabitants of the aquarium. The air pump, supplying air to the water, enriches it with oxygen, creates air and water flows. This process is called aeration, and such water pumps are sometimes called aerators. Simply put, this is an air pump

.The main requirements that must be placed on the device when choosing it

Often the aquarium is in the same room where people relax. Therefore, for the aquarium it is better to choose a silent water pump. This device operates continuously. To reduce the noise level of the device, you can remove it into the cabinet. But then you need too long duct. Therefore, it is worth thinking carefully before making the water pump silent, by isolating it. It is better to purchase a silent device at once. The air pump for the aquarium is the most silent. Water pumps should have a smooth adjustment of the air flow. Such a device can be easily adjusted to a different number of filters and nozzles. The power of the water pump is calculated on the basis of the following parameters: 0.5 l / h per 1 l of water. This is the way to solve the question of which water pump is better suited for a specific tank capacity. For a large aquarium (over 100 liters) use a piston water pump. For such an aquarium, it is better to take a device with low-voltage power (12 volts). In the event of a power outage, it can be connected even with a car battery. You can make a quiet water pump using old equipment yourself. So, in order for a home-made device to work as quietly as possible, you will need a wooden box and a box from under the film. In this case, a quiet water pump is obtained by compensating the shock wave with a jar. The very same self-made water pump hides in a wooden box.

Also, water pumps are adjustable and not adjustable.

Those. A special regulator is provided on the housing of the water pump that reduces the applied voltage, resulting in a smooth adjustment of the air supplied by the pump.

It should also immediately be said that modern water pumps are divided into several groups, for an aquarist they can be divided as follows, first of all it:

– water pumping stations – professional water pumps – water pumps for general consumption

– autonomous water pumps

How to install a water pump in the aquarium?

Install a water pump in the aquarium is quite simple. First of all, it is necessary to determine the place where it will be located. This may be the aquarium itself, a cover or a table. The device is placed on top of the water, or below the water level, but then a non-return valve is always installed on the air duct. It is desirable that the aerator is located next to the heater. So the heating water will mix, and the conditions for the fish will be the best.

When the noise of a running water pump causes discomfort, it should be placed on foam or foam rubber. This will reduce the noise, but will not give 100% of the result. Some act cardinally: put the device away and stretch a long hose. Any water pump needs to be cleaned periodically. If this is not done, the performance will decrease and eventually the device will break. Also pollution increase the noise level.

Types of water pumps

The first type of pump delivers air through the movement of special membranes that allow air flow only in one direction. Such an aquarium inlet pump consumes very little power and works with low noise.

The main disadvantage of this device is low power. Aerator is not suitable for large containers. However, for example, for a 150-liter home aquarium, a small membrane silent water pump will fit perfectly.

Another type of aquarium aerators – piston vodushnye pumps. From their name it follows that air is pushed out with the help of a piston. These aerators are more expensive, but their advantage is high performance and durability.

True, the noise level of piston vodoshnyh pumps is slightly higher than in devices of the first type. Such aerators are usually installed in large aquariums or columns.

Home aerators of both types are both powered by household electrical network, and from batteries. Each aerator kit includes a flexible hose from which pumped air comes out.

What is the battery powered water pump used for?

There are situations when urgent transportation of fish is required. However, do not deprive the fish of such important oxygen for them. Otherwise, they may simply die. You can use the road device for a small aquarium. Such equipment operates on batteries, which are very easy to replace at the right time. A water-powered pump with batteries allows you to protect against the death of fish that are outside the stationary aquarium. Such equipment has small dimensions, so taking it with you on a trip is very convenient. A battery-powered device may also be necessary if the power is often cut off in the room. Such a device is recommended to keep in reserve absolutely all aquarists. This is due to the fact that even short-term oxygen deprivation is fraught with fish for death. The question of how to choose a water pump, even experienced aquarists ask. When choosing a water pump, it is necessary to focus not on its price category, but on the amount of water that it can drive in one hour. It is desirable to acquire powerful silent water pumps. You can use a homemade device.

The required capacity of the water pump depending on the volume of the aquarium

The capacity of the installed water pump directly depends on the volume of the aquarium. Dependence is directly proportional – the larger the aquarium, the greater the performance of the water pump. The optimal performance of a water pump is 0.5-0.7 liters of air per hour per liter of water. But, this is the bottom bracket. As a rule, it is recommended to purchase high capacity water pumps. Why? For example, you decide to install a second nebulizer in the aquarium. This, as you understand, requires additional power from the water pump and additional capacity. More powerful water pumps need to be bought in those cases if the aquarium is high. Here the water pump will need to overcome the water pressure. In addition, the power of the water pump also depends on the diffuser. The smaller the holes, the greater the pressure necessary to create a water pump.

Disadvantages of water pumps

The main drawback of a water pump is noise. No matter how the manufacturers struggle for noiselessness, they have so far failed to win this fight. Yes, it was possible to reduce the performance of this parameter to 25-30 dB, but it is all the same, quite a lot. As a rule, aquariums are installed either in the bedroom or in the nursery, and since the water pump sometimes works around the clock, its noise in the silence of the night is very noticeable. The craftsmen are hiding water pumps in self-made soundproof boxes, which is a good way out of this situation. The second drawback is the work of electricity. And how do you know electricity and water are incompatible concepts. Therefore, when installing and operating a water pump, it is necessary to exercise elementary caution.

Water pump care, preventive maintenance

To work flawlessly, a water pump needs care. It consists of the following: – regular replacement of air filters (if they are available at its entrance); – control and replacement of rubber membranes (often because of the rupture of the membrane accounts for the entire water pump, as a repair kit is very difficult to find for a particular model); – regular cleaning of the diffusers (pull out and rinse in clean water, thereby reducing the resistance of the diffuser);

– monitoring the condition of air hoses, and replacing them if necessary.

Alternative to the water pump in an aquarium

As an alternative to the water pump, an oxidizer can be offered. It is extremely simple in design and operation of the device. It does not require the supply of electricity or the installation of batteries, and it is absolutely silent because only chemical reactions occur in it. The principle of operation of the oxidizer is the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (h3O2) into water (H2O) and active oxygen (O), under the action of a catalyst. As a catalyst, there are metals that, when oxidized, take a part of the active oxygen, and the excess oxygen is released into the water.

Why an air pump in an aquarium?

All equipment intended for aquariums serves primarily to maintain the stability of an already established biosystem. Beginners aquarists tend to place too high hopes on equipment – they acquire expensive water pumps, the best filters, but cannot achieve the desired results.

Why do the fish do not want to multiply rapidly, and the plants are sick and not in a hurry to grow? Despite all the connected first-class equipment, the aquarium does not accept the planned appearance. This happens because the first thing to do is to wait for the ecological balance in the “neglected” aquarium, and only then turn on the additional equipment.

Filters and air pump for the aquarium do not solve the problems associated with the instability of the parameters of the aquarium. The question naturally arises: why, for example, the same water pump?

Functions of the water pump

The water pump provides aeration – it promotes the saturation of water with oxygen. Oxygen enrichment is achieved by the constant release of a stream of air into the water – from the side it looks like a constantly rising chain of air bubbles. (By the way, flowing bubbles significantly increase the aesthetic appeal of an aquarium.)

Continuous boiling water helps to equalize the temperature of the water. Suppose a thermostat is installed in an aquarium — then certain zones of water heat up more, while remote areas do not have time to warm up. A running water pump improves the circulation of water and helps to equalize the temperature. Water circulation in turn prevents water stagnation.

Whether an air pump is needed in an aquarium depends on the type of aquarium, the number of fish living in it, and the number of plants. In a small aquarium with few inhabitants, a sufficient level of oxygen can be maintained by the plants, for a larger aquarium a water pump is needed. Moreover, the greater the volume of the “reservoir”, the greater must be the capacity of an aquarium water pump.
