Suppose your aquarium has a volume of 100 liters and there lives a whole colony of fish in an amount of, say, 50 individuals. The remnants of food, waste products of your fish fall to the bottom and begin to rot. Often, changing the water in an aquarium does not always have the time and effort: try changing the water in a 100-liter aquarium at least once and see how troublesome it is! In rotten water, fish suffer from a great lack of air and can die or become sick. And it is for such large aquariums that the water pumps are intended: they perfectly saturate the water with oxygen! And once there is oxygen in the water, the health of the fish is safe! However, the water pump does not completely solve the problem: you still have to change the water in the aquarium, whether you like it or not!
Now, about when exactly to turn on the water pump: it should not work 24 hours a day! Personally, I use the aquarium inlet pump twice a day: during the day (I turn it on for 20 minutes) and in the evening at 22 o’clock (I also turn it on for 20 minutes). This "airing" of water to my fish very much! The only thing I want to add is that in the summer, aeration should be carried out more often and longer (at high air temperatures, the water in the aquarium heats up and oxygen is consumed faster).
By the way, there is one more “knight’s move” and it is more suitable for lazy aquarists. When it comes time to replace the water in the aquarium, you can somewhat simplify this task. For this you need to collect garbage from the bottom of the aquarium. How to do it? Use a piece of transparent thin hose as a “vacuum cleaner”. The diameter of the hose should not be large: it is better to use a dropper or a hose of a slightly larger diameter (the diameter of an old Soviet penny), but not a watering! Lower one end of the hose to the bottom of the aquarium (just to the bottom: stick the edge of the hose into the ground!), And the other into the empty bucket, which is located below the level of the aquarium. In order for the water from the aquarium to overflow into the bucket, it is necessary to create a negative pressure in the hose. In simple words, I will say this: make a "leak" and the water will begin to flow! The main thing – do not swallow the smelly water. When the water begins to drain into the bucket, use the hose as a “vacuum cleaner”: drive them along the bottom and collect garbage – food residue and other waste. Be careful and attentive: do not pull the fish into the hose! When the bottom cleaning is finished, just bend the hose in the middle and the water will stop flowing! Now look at the amount of dirty water drained and pour as much into the aquarium. After that, turn on the aquarium inlet pump for 15 minutes. Here is a method for the "lazy."
